This specialty covers surgical procedures involving the gastrointestinal tract, biliary system, spleen, pancreas, liver, rectum and mammary glands, as well as abdominal hernias. It may also include surgical treatment of the thyroid and related glands, non-cardiovascular thoracic surgery. These surgical areas do not require a specialist per se, a general surgeon may perform these surgical procedures, but this varies by country. In some countries, general surgery is considered one type of specialty and a super specialization is understood by the branching of the different surgical specialties. General surgery requires a great deal of knowledge in clinical as well as procedural theory.

 

The majority of surgical procedures in general surgery require similar instruments, with the exception of procedures involving the rectum, mammary glands, thyroid and lungs, which require special instruments.

 

Plastic surgery is the surgical specialty which seeks to reconstruct deformities and correct functional deficiencies through the transformation of the human body. The goal is for a patient, who may have been born with a birth defect or suffered a disfiguring accident, to regain a degree of normality physically and functionally. This also allows to bring an aesthetic aspect. Plastic surgery has been further divided into Reconstructive or Reparative Surgery and Aesthetic or Cosmetic Surgery.
